  • My Pilgrimage to India: From Survival to Embodiment

From the moment I arrived, India held up a mirror.

Every sound. Every color. Every encounter.

I remember sitting in chanting where men and women sang back and forth the words Ramana Maharishi had written over a hundred years ago… The sound rose, powerful and sacred, and moved through my body in ways I had never felt.

I sobbed. Not from sadness.

From RECOGNITION.

It touched the part of me that had survived. The part that had been wounded and waiting… and it began to heal from the coherence I felt in that energetic field.

In my years of working with trauma, I’ve watched what happens when a body that has been braced for survival finally exhales. The chanting did that for me in ways I hadn’t anticipated.

And then there was Gracie.

A little street dog who chose me about half way into my time in India. She was cautious from all she had been through in her little life as a street dog but I could feel her deep longing for love…companship. Her little body was exhausted from living the life of a street dog.

Over time we began to trust one another and developed a beautiful bond. She softened and in about a week, I heard her howling in the night at the street light above. She had found her place in that street and she was letting the world know.

Still she was mirroring me.

My time in India had done the same to Veronica, the survivor and Shimira was beginning to take up space. The one who had turned wounds into wisdom.

The night I left for the airport, she chased my taxi, barking. I watched her running through tears. Gracie was still teaching me one last lesson. Every part of me wanted to take her home with me. But as I watched her chase me, I thought to myself:

Can I love without possession?

The grace of letting go. Trusting that she, too, is on her own beautiful journey.

I’ve sat with that teaching many times since. It shows up in my work now. The hardest AND most liberating realization in any healing journey is this:

YOU CANNOT HOLD ON TO WHAT IS NOT MEANT TO STAY.

But also… what is real, what is truly yours, does not leave. It moves through you, as you.

What a Spiritual Pilgrimage for Healing Gives You That Nothing Else Can

India was not a place I visited.

It was a two-month invitation to step devotionally and fully into who I authentically am.

From Veronica, the survivor of trauma, to Shimira, the remarkably resilient essence that walks in devotion and faith to continue the path of conscious evolution and supports others to do the same.

India cleared away what I had been holding. The fear. The smallness. The survival strategies that had served me and also outlived their purpose.

What it left behind was this:

Presence. Humility. Joy. Unapologetic authenticity.

Being back has been an adjustment and the truth is, I miss India deeply. The intensity, the beauty, the devotion woven into every moment. But what I experienced in India is not gone.

I carry her within me and that includes sweet little Gracie girl.

And I hear the quiet invitation every day in my practices of stillness…

Be India

To stand fully in my beauty while remaining humble. To stay open. To live with joy instead of constantly excavating what’s “wrong.”

The inner temple is complete. The scaffolding has been taken down, the tools gently set aside. While my evolution will always continue, the excavation of what was is no longer where I live.

Now, it is time to open the doors and share all that I have become.

What would it feel like to allow your own inner pilgrimage to show you who you authentically are?

Why Healing Feels Harder Before It Gets Easier “why the stripping away is actually the healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a spiritual pilgrimage for healing?

A spiritual pilgrimage for healing is a journey, inner, outer, or both, undertaken not for adventure but for soul-level recognition. It uses sacred land, unfamiliar environments, and devotional practice to accelerate what Shimira calls the alchemy of healing: the transformation of wounds into wisdom. Unlike conventional therapy, it works through the body, the energetic field, and the soul simultaneously.

How is a healing pilgrimage different from regular travel?

Regular travel is about seeing new places. A healing pilgrimage is about being seen by them. The difference is intention and surrender. When you travel to heal, you’re saying yes to whatever the journey wants to show you, including the parts of yourself you’ve been avoiding. That’s where the real transformation lives.

Do I need to travel somewhere sacred to experience transformation?

No. India called me specifically (and I know that pull is not universal). What IS universal is the invitation to go somewhere, inward, most of all, that asks you to be fully present with yourself. Transformation happens wherever you bring your full willingness to see and be seen.

What Remains After You Come Home

India revealed not something outside of me.

It revealed what was ALWAYS within me.

Humble. Potent. Authentic. Present.

If something is pulling you, a place, a practice, a calling that doesn’t make logical sense. I’ve learned to trust that pull as sacred information. The Divine doesn’t speak in spreadsheets.

It speaks in pulls, visions, street dogs who choose you, and chanting that moves through your bones…

If you’re feeling that kind of pull and want to explore what it means for your healing journey, I’d love to sit with you in that.
